Soldering is done!

LCD display. as you can see, pins are needed to attach it to my breadboard, so I will attempt to do that.

The LED display has no colon, this particular display has 12 pins, the version of this display that has a colon in it, and that I have seen on the internet more, has 16 pins. I recommend purchasing the 16 pin version.
I am trying to decide between using the aforementioned LED display, or using an LCD display that came with the arduino.  Although the LCD display would be easier, the LED display would look slightly better I feel.  Because of all the problems associated with the LED display, I think I am going to go with the LCD display.

it doesnt necessarily light up correctly, but it lights up.
